The 31st Annual Hanji Painting Exhibition, hosted by the Korea Hanji Painting Association, will be held at Gyeongmin Art Gallery 1 in Insa-dong, Seoul. Korea World Master CHO Su-jeong, who first coined the term “Hanji Painting” in 1985, has devoted decades to introducing, preserving, and developing this unique art form through numerous exhibitions and educational activities both in Korea and abroad. Her artistic vision established a new concept of painting — creating with hands instead of brushes — opening a distinctive path that bridges Korea’s traditional heritage with contemporary expression. Hanji Painting is an original art form created by tearing and layering colored hanji—Korea’s traditional handmade paper—without using paint. Utilizing the paper’s soft yet resilient texture, artists achieve depth and richness by overlapping multiple layers of color. With only an awl, glue, and delicate fingertips, this art form reinterprets the beauty of traditional Korean materials and aesthetics in a modern context. On May 12, 2025 (Monday), a traditional cultural experience event was held at the Hanji Gallery of Master Jo Soo-jung in Gangnam, Seoul. The event was co-hosted by the World Masters Committee (WMC), the World Masters Association, and the Korea Masters Association, in cooperation with the Association of Spouses of Ambassadors to Korea (ASAS). Spouses of ambassadors from around 10 countries participated in the program and had the opportunity to experience traditional Korean art firsthand. Themed “Summer Fan Crafting,” the program introduced participants to hanji, Korea’s traditional paper, and guided them through a hands-on activity of decorating fans with hanji flowers.Artist CHO Su-Jeong, who first coined the term Hanjigrim (Hanji painting) in 1985, has dedicated decades to promoting the beauty of hanji art through exhibitions and educational efforts both in Korea and abroad.The event began with a walk through the rooftop garden, followed by a welcoming message and a traditional Korean tea ceremony. The highlight was the creative session where guests crafted their own hanji fan artworks. Notably, disciples of Master CHO from the WMC’s Washington D.C. chapter also participated, assisting with interpretation and guidance, enriching the spirit of cultural exchange. On April 23, 2025, a traditional Hanbok experience event was successfully held at Bidanbim Gangnam Main Gallery, with the participation of the spouses of ambassadors from Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Hosted by the World Masters Committee and organized at the invitation of World Master Lee Wang-sook, a designated World Master of Korea, the event offered distinguished guests a unique opportunity to wear Hanbok and experience firsthand the delicate processes of tailoring and stitching. It was a meaningful occasion to experience the aesthetics of Hanbok and the value of Korean traditional culture.
